Stone wall and poppies, Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon, Southern France

I like poppies: the stark red colour of their fragile petals, the big heads on long thin stems. When you drive through Southern France in late May/early June you see them everywhere, especially along roads and waterways. Whole fields are awash in their red colour. They like the full sun, but otherwise they are undemanding and their roots take hold even in small cracks in the pavement or walls. It was a windy day – like it is so often in the Rhône region – and the poppies just wouldn’t hold still. I shot maybe 20 pictures until I got one that wasn’t all blurry.
